Statement from Ruth Martin, Silver Spring resident and Vice President, Workplace Justice Campaigns at MomsRising.org, a national online and on-the-ground organization of more than 30,000 Maryland members and more than 1 million mothers and their families across the country, on the Maryland State Senate’s vote to delay implementation of the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act
“Today’s vote in the Maryland State Senate to delay implementation of the Healthy Working Families Act until July is deeply disappointing. Maryland workers have waited much too long for earned sick days, and they should not have to wait any longer.
“Maryland is currently in the middle of one of its worst flu seasons -- workers need earned sick leave now, not in six months. For years, MomsRising members and their children have visited state legislators clad in superhero capes to urge them to use their legislative superpowers to make earned sick days a reality in Maryland. We now urge the House of Delegates to once again use those superpowers to reject this delay. Maryland’s workers are counting on them.”
