‘This Cruelty Must End,’ Moms Leader Says, as Trump Administration Fails to Reunite Families by Deadline Established by Federal Court

“The Trump administration’s failure to reunite hundreds -- perhaps more than 1,000 -- children with their parents or family members by today’s deadline is cruel, inhumane and inexcusable. The administration’s failure to comply with the court order is exacerbating the trauma and pain for all involved. Every day, every hour, every moment that children remain separated from their parents means more terror and more trauma for all involved.
“There is absolutely no excuse for the Trump administration to have missed the court’s deadline for even one child. Despite denials by high-ranking officials, we now know that the administration has deported hundreds of parents without asking for, or documenting, their consent to leave their children behind. This outrageous act will complicate and significantly lengthen the time it takes to reunite families. No parent should be deported and forced to leave a child behind – ever.
“The administration created this crisis and it is responsible for solving it by reuniting all families. The court determined that today was the day this shameful chapter in our history should finally end, and now the administration has failed to do even that. It has no right to decide which children will be reunited with their families and which will not.
“The moms of America call on our government to ensure this never happens again – not to one more family. That means closing the eligibility loophole the Trump administration is using to unilaterally decide which children will never see their parents again. It means providing the services and supports families need to recover from the trauma that our government has inflicted on them. It means rejecting family incarceration, which is not an acceptable solution to family separation. And it means rejecting prosecution for any families that seek asylum in our country.
“We must treat every family with compassion and dignity. This cruelty simply must end.”
