The Moms of America Can’t Wait to Vote
Lisa Lederer, 202-371-1996
Fun, funny videos. Personalized mom-to-mom postcards. Calls and texts that remind busy women to vote. Mini-marches to the polls. Voting squads and voting parties. Mailings to persuade busy moms to make time to vote. Coloring sheets and games that keep children occupied while waiting in line at the polls. Social media ads that focus on mom voters.
Those are among the activities the MomsRising Education Fund is using to activate moms across the country to vote this year, and to encourage other moms to turn out to vote as well. Through this powerful, unprecedented Get-Out-The-Vote campaign, MomsRising members have already signed up to send hundreds of thousands of postcards to registered voters who have not always voted in past elections. Members also have written personal notes to other moms on pre-stamped, pre-addressed postcards to encourage them to vote this year.
MomsRising members are signing up by the thousands to call and text mom voters. They have already sent tens of thousands of pieces of direct mail and texts, and are organizing family-friendly voting parties and other activities around the country. Helping drive engagement is a fun, funny new video featuring diverse moms talking about how excited they are to vote and have their views count this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=837RPT5cwhU&feature=youtu.be
The social media ads show a mom and daughter, walking hand-in-hand:
“Our members are tremendously enthusiastic about voting this year, and deeply engaged in this effort,” said Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, CEO and executive director of MomsRising, an online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families. “We want what’s best for our kids, our families and our future, and know the power is in our hands to shape our nation for the better. We recognize that one of the best ways to make the best future for our children is to use our power at the polls. That’s why so many MomsRising members are signing up to call other moms to remind them to vote, to send postcards, to hold voter parties, to share content online, and so much more. Have no doubt, there will be a MomsVote GOTV power surge in November!”
MomsRising is organizing against voter suppression around the country. The organization is also working with partners at the national, state and local levels, including childcare providers and pediatricians, to distribute GOTV coloring sheets to support families standing in voting lines, to spur conversations with young children about the importance of voting, and to remind families to vote.
“MomsRising is going all out to remind busy parents to be a voter this year and to raise a voter,” Rowe-Finkbeiner added. “With more than 80 percent of women having children by the time they are 44, the power of the mom vote is significant -- and busy moms are often the hardest pressed to find time to vote. Mom-to-mom, friend-to-friend, kid-to-kid, MomsRising is bringing mom voters to the polls.”
MomsRising has also co-convened a coalition of women-led organizations to help get out the vote: #CantWait2Vote. The Convening Committee includes the National Domestic Workers Alliance; National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and Black Women’s Roundtable; National Women’s Law Center; National Partnership for Women & Families; Black Voters Matter; PPFA; ASO Communications; United State of Women; #WhenWeAllVote; Black Futures Lab; Art Not War; United We Dream; Women’s March; EMERGE; Voto Latino; and MomsRising.
NOTE: MomsRising and MamaśConPoder can put media in touch with members -- who speak English or Spanish -- around the country who are actively engaged in Can’t Wait to Vote and/or are planning Get-Out-the-Vote parties or related activities. Many can talk about laws and programs their families rely on, such as the Affordable Care Act and SNAP, that have been threatened this year.
