A Historic Election, Powered by Moms

“From Ayanna Pressley in Massachusetts and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York to Ilhan Omar in Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib in Michigan to Jacky Rosen in Nevada, America’s moms and women spoke today, putting in place the most female, most diverse Congress in history. Historic wins weren’t universal, but there will now be more than 100 women in Congress in January for the first time ever and many are breaking new ground.
“The results are not yet all in, but we expect to have a historic number of moms in Congress, at least nine women governors and gains in state legislatures as well. We applaud voters for passing Amendment 4 in Florida, the largest expansion of voting rights in decades; expanding Medicaid in Idaho, Nebraska and Utah; and increasing the minimum wage in Arkansas and Missouri.
“Moms want what is best for our families and our future and that includes health coverage that covers essential benefits and people with pre-existing conditions, budgets that boost working families instead of the richest individuals and corporations, access to paid family and medical leave, and government that invests in quality, affordable childcare, education, food, housing and other essential supports that lift families, businesses and our economy.
“We want jobs that allow us to earn paid sick days, pay that is fair, and workplaces that reject discrimination. We want gun safety, criminal justice reform, and a government that rejects, rather than stokes, hatred -- and that treats immigrants, DREAMers and asylum-seekers with dignity, compassion and respect. We look forward to the next Congress addressing these vitally important issues.
“MomsRising put unprecedented energy and resources into this election, spending more than $1 million and reaching more than 10 million infrequent mom voters with our mom-to-mom GOTV activities, including through texts and postcard distribution; by pushing out the vote in states where there was widely reported voter suppression; and supporting on-the-ground voter turnout with fun activities for kids at select polling locations along with early voting parties and other activities in Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington state, California, Colorado and across the nation.
“We thank all the moms across the nation who stepped up to be voters, to raise voters, and to increase participation in democracy. Historic voter turnout happened yesterday and moms are committed to continuing to break records in voter participation.”
