Moms Leader Warns that 'Every Mom, Every Family Is at Risk' as Republicans Once Again Ask Court to Strike Down the Entire Affordable Care Act

“America’s moms have an enormous amount at stake in Texas v. United States, the case that was argued this afternoon before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. The Trump administration and a coalition of Republican-led states are once again trying to invalidate the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If they succeed, 133 million people living with a pre-existing condition – more than half of them women – will be at risk for losing their health coverage. There will be chaos throughout our health care system and grave harm to moms and families in every state.
“This case jeopardizes the consumer protections millions of moms and families rely on, as well as our coverage for prescription drugs and maternity and mental health care. A ruling in favor of Texas could end Medicaid expansion, which has been critical in reducing racial disparities in health care coverage. An estimated 21 million people could lose coverage – many of them women and children – putting millions of people in harm’s way. A ruling for Texas could mean that 2 million adult children can no longer stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26; 60 million seniors pay more for Medicare coverage; and insurers once again charge women more than men for the same plans, and impose caps that take away our coverage when we get sick and need it most.
“This case was brought by Republicans who will stop at nothing to take away our health care. They are trying to do through the courts what they failed to do through the Congress, even though the country rejects their position.
“Texas v. United States poses a grave threat to our nation’s health, stability, and economy. Every mom and every family is at risk – and we will fight to protect our health care.”
