On International Women’s Day, the March Toward Equality Has Resumed, But We Have a Long Way To Go

“America’s moms applaud the Biden-Harris administration for this morning’s executive orders to establish a White House Gender Policy Council to advance equal rights and opportunity for women and girls; as well as to direct the U.S. Department of Education to review its policies for consistency with the Biden-Harris Administration’s intent to guarantee education free from sexual violence. The Trump-DeVos Title IX regulation, which prioritizes the rights of those who commit sexual harassment and assault in schools and on campuses, is an atrocity that denies civil rights to survivors. It must be reversed and we must protect all women and girls in learning environments.
“We also commend, once again, the U.S. House and Senate for passing the American Rescue Plan and look forward to the House passing the Senate version later this week. Enactment of this bill will provide essential support to moms and families who are suffering terribly from the health and economic impacts of the pandemic; its enactment is especially important for women and moms of color, who are experiencing compounded harms due to structural racism.
“These are important steps forward, as we work to build a care infrastructure that lifts families and our economy. More needs to be done, so we will continue working to make sure struggling families have the unemployment benefits they need to make ends meet for as long as they need them by asking Congress to return to the question of unemployment benefits this summer. We will also continue working, every day, for comprehensive, sustainable paid leave that covers everyone, always; for a boost to the federal minimum wage; and for a pathway to citizenship for immigrants, many of whom have been on the front lines of the pandemic response. The march toward equality has resumed with the new administration, and together we have a long way to go and much work to do.”
