Moms Leaders Condemn SCOTUS Failure to Block Texas Abortion Ban, Urge Congress to Pass Women’s Health Protection Act

Statement of leaders of MomsRising, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to block Texas’ extreme anti-abortion law:

“Last night the U.S. Supreme Court told Texans – and people in every other state with anti-abortion leadership – that they cannot count on the basic constitutional protections everyone in our country deserves. In allowing Texas to ban nearly all abortions and deny pregnant people their right to access this basic health care, the Supreme Court abdicated its duty. The harm to low-income people, people of color, individuals with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities will be immense and not confined to Texas, as the Supreme Court has sent the message to other states that they, too, can deny this basic right.

“Giving the public the authority to enforce the Texas abortion ban compounds the grave harm this destructive law will do, to health care providers as well as to people who need abortion care. Texas’ law trounces trusted relationships between patients and their health care providers, undermines women’s health and autonomy, and creates financial incentives for intrusion into the most personal decisions women make. Most people who have abortions are moms and everyone should be able to determine, if, when and how many children they will have; and absolutely must be able to make deeply personal decisions about abortion care with dignity and without interference from politicians or the public.”

“Congress has the power to right this terrible wrong. Moms are urging Congress to act immediately to protect access to abortion care for everyone in this country by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 3755/S.1975). This legislation would create a safeguard against bans and medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion care by creating a statutory right for providers to provide abortion care, and patients to receive that care. It would invalidate unconstitutional bans like the one in Texas and those that have been adopted or are being considered in other states.

“With Black, Brown, Latino, Indigenous, and other POC in Texas and elsewhere already living in fear for their lives due to police violence in their communities and schools, food insecurity, and now these attacks on our access to reproductive health care, there is no time to waste.
