America’s Moms Do Not Want SCOTUS to Gut Or Overturn Roe v. Wade
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Our country’s moms and families were alarmed by what the conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justices said during Wednesday’s oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Coupled with SCOTUS’ failure to enjoin the appalling Texas anti-abortion law – which denies access to nearly all abortions and is causing disproportionate, grave, irreparable harm to low-income people, people of color, individuals with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities – the Court is sending alarming signals that it will not protect women’s fundamental right to abortion. That would be devastating for the country. Women in Mississippi, and in our nation, know what is best for themselves and their families and should be trusted and respected to make their own decisions.
“We note, as well, that attorneys for the state of Mississippi argued that ‘the march of progress’ has allowed women to achieve better balance ‘in their professional and personal lives’ – a truly absurd claim that demonstrates an utter failure to understand the reasons women need access to reproductive health care as well as the overwhelming challenges facing working moms in America today.
“Abortion is basic health care. Most people who have abortions are moms. Moms want everyone to be able to determine, if, when and how many children to have. We absolutely must be able to make deeply personal decisions about abortion care with dignity and without interference from politicians or the public. We are counting on the U.S. Supreme Court to protect our health, our rights, and our autonomy, and our country’s ability to achieve social, economic, racial and gender justice.”
