On the Anniversary of the Disgraceful Insurrection, Moms Want Lawmakers to Protect Our Right to Vote – and Our Democracy

Statement of leaders of MomsRising, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the anniversary of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol:

“Today is a somber anniversary, when we remember last January’s brutal, appalling attack by domestic terrorists on the U.S. Capitol and on the lawmakers and staff who were doing their jobs by certifying a free and fair election. We recognize the terrible toll that attack took in deaths and injuries as well as the toll it has taken on our unity and civility as a nation. America’s moms strongly support decisive action to hold accountable every single person who planned, funded, or participated in that attack. These white supremacist, misogynistic criminals remain an enormous threat today, working with allies at the local, state and federal levels to spread disinformation, deny people their right to vote, sabotage our elections, and in other ways destroy our democracy.

“At this juncture, lawmakers have no greater responsibility than to protect every person’s right to vote and protect the integrity of our elections. That begins with passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. There is no room for equivocation on this. Any member of Congress who fails to support these bills at this juncture, when our country’s future is on the line, is failing to support America.”

“Our democracy is broken when federal lawmakers ignore the will of the people on the freedom to vote, as well as on paid family and medical leave, gun control, prescription drug prices, immigration reform, and so many other issues that shape our lives. We need the U.S. Congress to hear our voices and respond to our needs. That will only happen if we ensure that all Americans have their votes counted. We need safe, accessible, transparent elections not tainted by threats, intimidation, extreme gerrymandering, foreign interference, dark monied interests, and sabotage.
