Today, As Taxes Are Due, Moms Want Lawmakers to Finally Require Billionaires and Wealthy Corporations to Pay Their Fair Share

“Millions of working families who are struggling to put food on their tables, gas in their cars, pay the rent, and buy school supplies and clothing for their kids are nonetheless filing taxes and writing checks to the U.S. Treasury today. It’s time – past time – lawmakers require our country’s billionaires and wealthiest corporations to do the same. It’s time the wealthy pay their fair share.
“Congress has utterly failed working families. Today in the United States, the average tax rate for working families is 13%, and the average tax rate for billionaires is just 8%. That is appalling, as is the fact that many billionaires and many of our wealthiest corporations pay no federal taxes at all.
“America’s moms need the Child Tax Credit to be extended immediately and want a fair and equitable tax system that works for our country’s working families. It’s grossly and shamefully overdue.”

“According to an analysis by Americans for Tax Fairness, our nation’s 740 or so billionaires saw their collective net worth rise by $2 trillion during the first two years of COVID-19 to an astonishing $5 trillion. That happened even as hunger among children and seniors spiked, families fell behind on their bills, and moms were forced to quit their jobs because they couldn’t afford the child care they needed to stay in the workforce.
“Instead of closing the loopholes that allow ultra-rich individuals and corporations to evade taxes, Congressional Republicans and Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) let the expanded Child Tax Credit – a lifeline for millions of families – end. And lawmakers have failed to fund the care infrastructure – including investments in child care, pre-K, paid family and medical leave, health care, and home- and community-based services – that families, businesses and our economy need. We need tax reform and a fair tax system that works for everyone.”
