Oklahoma’s Cruel, Irresponsible Anti-Abortion Law Will Put Women’s Health, Lives at Risk
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Oklahoma lawmakers trampled on the rights and endangered the health of women in the state by enacting a near-total ban on abortion. This law is cruel and shameful. By denying women essential health care, it will make life immeasurably more dangerous and difficult for moms and families facing unintended pregnancies. After the U.S. Supreme Court declared open season on women’s health and rights by refusing to enjoin Texas’ anti-choice law, Oklahoma lawmakers went even farther by outlawing abortion care in the state, even though Roe v. Wade still stands.
“Low-income women, women of color, young and immigrant women, and those in rural communities and who are LGBTQ+ will surely suffer the most. This law denies women our essential rights and freedoms. It puts the health, lives, and economic security of America’s moms and women at grave risk.”

“Anti-abortion lawmakers across the country are attacking women’s autonomy and ability to be free and equal members of society. Most people who have abortions are moms and everyone should be able to determine, if, when and how many children they will have, and to make deeply personal decisions about abortion care with dignity and without interference from politicians or the public.
“The fact that Oklahoma’s abortion ban is enforced by private citizens who have been granted a license to sue anyone who helps a woman access health care makes this even worse. Lawmakers in Oklahoma, Texas, and elsewhere are trouncing trusted relationships between patients and their health care providers, undermining women’s health and autonomy, and creating financial incentives for intrusion into the most personal decisions women make. Everyone — no matter where they live — deserves access to essential health care.”
