DACA Ruling a Reprieve, a Warning, and an Urgent Call to Action for Congress

Statement of Xochitl Oseguera, Vice President, MomsRising and MamásConPoder, on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in Texas v. United States this evening:

“Ending DACA (the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program) would be a massive blow not just to the 600,000+ people enrolled in the program but to our workforce, our economy, and our country. We are pleased that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is allowing people in the program to renew their status – for now – and that it sent the case back to the lower court to consider the new Biden administration regulation fortifying the program.

“However, it is very clear that the DACA program is in grave peril, primarily because Congress has failed to create permanent protections for the hundreds of thousands of people who were brought to this country as children, making it the only place they have ever called home. They are our health care providers, teachers, and care workers. They hold essential jobs that strengthen our communities. Many are parents who are at risk for being separated from their families. They deserve a path to citizenship and for the uncertainty about their futures to end. It is a shameful dereliction of duty that Congress has failed, for so many years, to provide permanent protections to this community. That must change.

“Tonight’s ruling is a reprieve, a warning, and an urgent call to action for Congress. Every immigrant deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect.”
