Moms Have a Lot at Stake as SCOTUS Considers Access to Mifepristone
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“The continued availability of mifepristone, which has been used safely and effectively in the United States for more than 23 years and is the only option many of us have left for abortion, is essential to the health and wellbeing of millions of moms and families. America’s moms are counting on the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the outrageous lower court rulings and secure our access to mifepristone.
“Restrictions on medication abortion are without merit and deeply harmful. No court should ever have restricted access to this FDA-approved medication, which has been proven safer than penicillin, Tylenol, and Viagra. The stakes in this case are enormous. Even people living in states that are protecting abortion rights could have their ability to access mifepristone severely restricted if the Court rules against the FDA. And an adverse ruling here could put access to other FDA-approved medications at risk.
“The attacks on our access to mifepristone have intensified the immense cruelty and hardship SCOTUS caused with its Dobbs ruling last year. Moms, women of color, low-income women, young, rural and immigrant women, people with disabilities, and those who are LGBTQIA+ are suffering the most. Most people who have abortions are moms, and moms want all safe methods of abortion care to be accessible to all who need it, regardless of where they live, their financial status, or the source of their health coverage. Being able to choose if we have children, and if so, when and how many children to have, which includes access to abortion care, is a fundamental right.
“Moms will remain in this fight for as long as our access to reproductive health care is threatened or denied. Reproductive rights are human rights. Denials of safe medications and other health care, and forced births, are never okay.”
