Full Funding for WIC Is a Major, Meaningful Victory for Moms, Babies, and the Country

“America’s moms are thrilled and tremendously relieved that Congress has included full funding for WIC in the bipartisan budget bill it completed work on today. We look forward to President Biden signing it into law, which will avert the catastrophe the looming shortfall would have created, with babies going hungry, new moms going without breastfeeding support, and toddlers going without nutritious food.
“Moms have profound and lasting appreciation for WIC, and MomsRising members were deeply engaged in this fight. We submitted more than 167,000 constituent signatures and letters from MomsRising members to Congress. Our members made nearly 7,500 calls to their representatives and senators. More than 3,200 MomsRising members shared personal stories about how WIC has helped their families. Prior to Valentine’s Day, MomsRising members went to Capitol Hill (some dressed in heart costumes) and distributed candy, books with stories about WIC from moms across the country, and Valentines hand-decorated by moms urging Congress to fully fund WIC. MomsRising members made similar deliveries to the district offices of members of Congress.
“Given the high cost of food and baby formula and the essential support WIC provides for young families, as well as the studies that show WIC boosts the economy, it should not have taken this long for Congress to appropriate these funds for a fiscal year that began on October 1, 2023. Still, we are gratified that it finally happened. This is a major, meaningful victory and our country will be much better off as a result.”
