‘A Huge and Inexcusable Mistake:’ Moms Horrified Trump Administration Is Turning Its Back on Prevention
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“America’s moms want our streets, schools, and homes to be safe from gun violence, our opioid prevention programs to be strong, and crime victims to get the services they need – so it is distressing to learn the Trump administration is cancelling literally hundreds of community grants that advance those and other vitally important goals. Reneging on multi-year grants promised to nonprofits and local governments is unacceptable. Simply announcing that they do not align with the new administration’s goals – which is stunning given the administration’s promises to address the opioid crisis and ‘crime’ – is not an acceptable reason to take this drastic and unprecedented action, which will force programs all across the country to close. These cancellations will harm some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, including those with substance abuse and mental health problems.”

“The more we invest in our communities, the more successful they will be. Moms and families want to see funding for mental health supports, hate crime prevention, public health, education, economic opportunity, services for victims of sexual assault and human trafficking, and the common sense gun violence prevention measures the vast majority of us support. Cancelling federal support for programs that make our communities safer and healthier is a huge and inexcusable mistake.”
