I have been a Type-1 diabetic since childhood.  Unlike Type 2 diabetes (which gets more coverage and generates a lot of rage/judgment), Type 1 diabetes is genetic and so far, irreversible.

I've never had a day of adolescence or adulthood without diabetes and I’ll likely have diabetes for the rest of my life.

This also means I've never had health insurance freedom-- meaning I'm tethered to my low-paying, unsatisfying job.  Even though I could make more money as an independent contractor, I can't get health insurance that way.

And treatment for my diabetes is expensive. I spent approximately $8,000 last year on health expenses that my insurance would not cover.   This cost includes my yearly deductible (which I met by January 4th), my co-pays, and the many denials my insurance issues me in a seemingly arbitrary, and definitely uneducated or even callous, manner.
