Our economy wouldn’t exist without the power of working people. Even holiday celebrations wouldn’t be possible without our labor. Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Festivus, Kwanzaa, or Christmas this month, it’s farm workers, package delivery drivers, cashiers, hospitality staff, and so many other frontline members of our communities that make holiday traditions possible. Here's the problem – pregnant workers in these important jobs are the likeliest to need, but not have access to the basic, but very important protections and accommodations in the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (S. 1486). Why? Because despite already passing the U.S. House of Representatives this year and having broad bipartisan support in the U.S. Senate, this important legislation has still not passed.

I share with my kids frequently about the benefits of gratitude and remind them that when you share with a friend (or a sibling!) that their actions had a positive impact, they’re more likely to repeat the action. The same is true for advocacy!

"Though he’s in childcare part-time, and even with a discount from my husband’s employer, we pay more than $800/month for care. At the same time, the director and teachers at my son’s program likely don’t make living wages. This is unacceptable." - Kate Rosenbaum

It was exhausting to care for my grandkids and my mom at the same time. Because our country doesn’t have a care infrastructure, everything has fallen on my shoulders. Right now, I’m juggling providing afterschool care with making sure my mother-in-law, who lives in an assisted living facility, is well taken care of and has everything she needs. There’s no way I can return to the workforce.

2022 is just around the corner and that means Washington State's 2022 legislative session will be here before we know it. The 2022 session is a short, 60-day session which means we only have a few weeks to make a big impact.

I’m stubborn. Yes, I have gifts to buy, cookies to bake, and kids and loved ones to care for, all on top of the ongoing madness of the pandemic. But I’m not taking my eyes off the Build Back Better Act. Not now. Not when we are so close to finally getting the care policies that my family -- and so...

Moms are exhausted. Burnout is real. The pandemic's effect on maternal mental health is staggering. We must – and we can – put into place public policies to support families and ease the stress and anxieties mothers are facing.

Did you know that we could have had a fair and just universal child care system 50 years ago? That’s right (and infuriating!). It was 50 years ago today when Republican President Richard Nixon vetoed the Comprehensive Child Development Act, a bill that would have implemented a multibillion-dollar...
