California lawmakers just made it easier for millions of children to get the health care they need, while, at the same time, building on California’s role as a leader in advancing technology. Specifically, Assembly Bill (AB) 415 (Logue), which was signed into law by Governor Brown late last week, will enable millions of children and other underserved populations to access much needed health care through the use of telehealth. While the benefits of telehealth are well-established, California law had restricted the use of telehealth to its full potential. AB 415 is a first step in removing...

Every day the California Governor and Legislature fail to pass a budget that restores Healthy Families funding, nearly 1,000 children are denied access to health coverage. Starting TODAY, the State’s Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board (MRMIB) will begin to deny children health coverage through the state’s Healthy Families Program. That’s because MRMIB must begin budgeting based on an estimated shortfall of $90 million due to underfunding in the Governor’s May Revise budget and cuts included in the Budget Conference Committee’s current budget package. That means, TODAY, children will begin...

After months of stalemate, a state budget is finally in place. Penny-wise and pound-foolish, the significant cuts to children's health care in the 2008-09 budget will reverse a decade of progress in covering our state's children and cause much costlier problems down the road.
