The day Arizona Governor Brewer signed SB 1070 was the day that I decided to leave "traditional" journalism to pursue a career as an independent journalist reporting on issues that impact the Latino community. My hopes are to tell stories that accurately portray the community and bring a balanced and fair dialogue to the negative rhetoric. Recently, I moved back to my hometown of Chicago after having worked at CNN for 4 years and another 4 at Univision. My career in mainstream media has been full of ups and downs – a bit of disillusion and a bit of triumphs. What motivated me to become a...

My name is Barb Kalbach, I am a fourth-generation family farmer and nurse from rural Iowa and a longtime member of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI). Last week I called the offices of Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan to tell him to stop financing payday lenders. I talked to a young man Moynihan’s office and told him that I thought payday lending was an outrageous, predatory practice, and if Bank of America was serious about investing in communities they would get out of the business completely. I told him that I live near Creston, IA, a small town of about 5,000 people that has...

After the death of her daughter, Wanda Hopkins was forced to take out a payday loan to cover some of the funeral costs and bills that were left when her daughter passed away. It took her 7 years to repay that initial $300 loan which set her on a financial spiral that has been nearly impossible to recover from. Sadly, Wanda’s story is not an isolated case according to a report recently released by National People’s Action: “Credit Segregation.” Wanda Hopkins is the prime target for predatory payday lending shops since she is African American and lives in Chicago’s inner city. Alarmingly, the...

But, you can hold the big banks accountable for their crimes by participating in a National AG Call-In Day , taking place today, Feb 3. Last week, homeowners in Iowa met for a second time with...

Just when you think big banks couldn’t be more heartless, now we’re hearing that thousands of families were illegally foreclosed on because the banks lost or destroyed their original mortgage notes . Some big banks announced that they would delay foreclosures until they investigate the faulty practices of their "Foreclosure Factories", but they are downplaying the latest crisis as just a "technical problem." This is more than just a technical problem. It is yet another a sign of a broken down system. And, it's costing families everything they have. Big banks have created a system where it is...
