Every afternoon 15 million U.S. children, more than a ¼ of our kids, are left alone after school . This huge and heartbreaking number isn't because of parent neglect, it reflects a simple fact: Afterschool programs are unavailable or too expensive for millions of families across this country. In fact, studies show that 18 million U.S. parents would enroll their kids in an afterschool program if one were simply available. Unfortunately, we're now in danger of losing the limited afterschool programs we currently have. The President just released his proposed budget and it does a lot of things...

As a new mom, I quickly learned what a cry of hunger sounds like. I was amazed by how quickly that cry drove me to action -- no mom can ignore that sound. Unfortunately, in today's economy, more and more families don't have the resources to answer those cries. In fact, a recent USDA study found that 1 in 4 children in the U.S. are on the brink of hunger. Tell your Senator to support the Access to Nutritious Meals for Young Children Act today! http://action.momsrising.org/cms/letter/action_957/ Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a study on hunger in America. Almost every parent has a story about trying to find childcare or the mad dash to pick your child up on time. But this one really takes the cake: Sgt. Kimberly D. Munley, mother of two, and a first responder at the scene of the shooting at Fort Hood last week, was shot three times while trying to stop the carnage. She later reported in an interview on the "Today Show" that her first thought as she was lying on the ground was to reach for her cell phone to find someone to pick up her daughter from childcare. Fortunately, for most of us, our childcare worries are not this dramatic, but we all...

Imagine what it'd be like to get up early each morning, apply to every job opening possible, not get any responses, care for a two-year-old daughter, and know that your last unemployment check will come on the 31st of this month. Your very last check. That's Rebecca's story.

In August more than 32,000 MomsRising members and sent a letter to the CEO of Kraft asking her to keep harmful chemicals out of Mac and Cheese. Here's the main point of the letter: I applaud the decision you made to remove synthetic growth hormones, artificial colorings like yellow #5, and chemical sweeteners like aspartame from the Kraft products that you distributed in other countries in 2008. It was an appropriate and consumer friendly response to changes in consumer sentiment overseas which were influenced by studies highlighting the risks that these synthetic chemicals, hormones and...

In a moment of maternal defeat, I decided that my son's future wife will just have to deal with his attachment to pacifiers. Yes, we all have our early challenges. And some, like affordable quality preschool and childcare, are bigger than others. So, it's music to my ears that Congress just introduced the new Early Learning Challenge Fund to Address some key early learning challenges.
