Back to school season is in full swing! There are lunches to pack, first day of school pictures to take, and usually some pesky last minute back to school shopping. Whether you’re just starting your shopping, or only need a few forgotten items, one way to start the school year off right is to take PVC off of your school supply list. What is PVC? PVC is a type of vinyl that is extremely common in school supplies; it shows up in everything from lunchboxes to binders to art supplies. It’s also highly toxic. PVC contains phthalates have been linked to asthma, learning disabilities, diabetes, and...

Photo credit: Photo by Flickr user Lauren Chagaris When it comes to college shopping, it’s good to make solid, non-toxic choices at the beginning so that you don’t have to invest money every year in replacing items . Toxic confession: I had the same plates all four years of school. They were plastic. Why didn’t I replace them? Spare cash was rare, and when it showed up, plates were the last thing on my mind. Why would I replace something I already had when I could pay for things like food and laundry? Back to school shopping doesn’t end with backpacks and pencil cases: If your kids are on...

"Can I email you later? I'm in labor." In "Maternity Leave? More Like a Pause," a recent article in the New York Times , new mom and consulting firm partner Carmen, recalled sending the quote above as an email while she was in the delivery room, remarking "That...was a fun email to send." I admire Carmen: her dedication to her job, her strong work ethic, the humor and pleasure she found in sending a work email during labor. In the article, Carmen is one of the many voices defending another hardworking, mom-to-be: Newly minted Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer. Carmen, and her executive level cohort,...

No kid should know the word 'pre-existing condition.' As a result of the Affordable Care Act (aka "Health Reform" and "Obamacare"), five million children with pre-existing conditions will get--and keep--the health coverage they need. Michelle from Texas shared her story: My 8 year old son is a leukemia survivor. He was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 3 years old. He underwent 3 years of chemotherapy and has been off treatment since June, 2010. My husband was laid off from his job about 2 years ago, so we went on COBRA for medical insurance. My husband is now self-employed. Prior to the...

Antibiotics have become so rampant in meat that we're starting to see a trend of increasing antibiotic resistance, one that shows no sign of slowing down . The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Medical Association all have highlighted the link between non-therapeutic uses of...

Great news! Recently, California Governor Jerry Brown directed state agencies to " revise flammability standards for upholstered furniture sold in the state ." This important move will help reduce toxic flame retardants in furniture in California. Photo credit: Photo by Flickr user Rik Ruff 3.1 million people are newly insured because of a provision in the Affordable Care Act that lets young adults to stay on their parents’ health care plans up to age 26. So were most people I knew. Health insurance came to a screeching halt at graduation, or a few months after for the very lucky. When the insurance ran out, it ran out, and there was usually no...

Happy National Women's Health Week! This is a whole week dedicated to the health concerns of women and the new opportunities for better health that the Affordable Care Act offers women. As a community, we have a responsibility to support the important women we know and do everything we can to help them take steps for longer, healthier, and...
