The 2020 State of the Union address was yet another massive exercise in gaslighting the American people. Since he took office three years ago, President Trump has told lie after lie after lie, and his 2020 SOTU was no different, misrepresenting his intentions and completely fabricating a record of achievement. Trump twisted reality, sowed confusion, spouted xenophobia, and hid the truth – it was gaslighting of the highest order: He lied about protecting our healthcare, especially people with pre-existing conditions . He lied about protecting safety net programs, when his administration and...

We begin yet another week with broken hearts and prayers, this time for the victims and families devastated by the weekend shooting rampage in Odessa, Texas, that has left seven people dead and another 22 injured . This is the second headline-grabbing mass murder in the Lone Star State this month, enabled by an assault rifle and high-capacity magazines , and coming just weeks after the El Paso Walmart shooting. While we are filled with sadness, we are also furious. Today, our U.S. Senators and Representatives returned to Congress from summer recess, many predetermined to oppose any action to...

Today, June 7, is #WearOrange National Gun Violence Awareness Day. With the tragic mass shooting in Virginia Beach just last weekend (and the seemingly daily parade of gun violence headlines in both local and national news), it often feels like every day is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Indeed, gun violence takes some 40,000 lives every year in our country. That’s why it’s so important to build the gun safety movement to get our leaders to finally find real solutions. So this week, in recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we are dedicating all of our #5Actions to gun...

Virginia is my home, and I am heartbroken over the mass shooting over the weekend at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center that killed 12 and injured at least four others. I am also furious that year after year, during the legislative session, the Republican majority in the General Assembly blocks every attempt to improve gun safety -- literally, every single attempt. Please help me say SHAME on the Republican majority in the Virginia General Assembly - and urge them to take action on gun safety for Virginia. It’s beyond time for them to take action to advance public safety. Too often they do...

A reckless killer of children should not carry a badge. Yet, that’s exactly what Cleveland’s police union is trying to do — get Timothy Loehmann, who shot to death 12-year-old Tamir Rice while he was playing in a park , back on the Cleveland police force. The very idea makes me both sick to my stomach and want to scream. It’s unthinkable, unacceptable, and just so. wrong. *Join me in helping Tamir’s mother Samaria Rice confront Cleveland’s police union and keep her son’s killer Timothy Loehmann from rejoining law enforcement. Tamir Rice died in 2014, but his death still haunts me. A mother...

Cold-hearted. That’s one of the only polite words I can come up with to describe how the gun lobby and their allies in Congress have stonewalled every effort to reduce our country’s gun violence epidemic. But now there’s new legislation that would prevent school shootings and suicides — and people of all political parties, even Republicans who have long opposed gun safety measures, are getting behind it! Extreme Risk Protection Order (or ERPO or GVRO*) laws give family members, law enforcement, and sometimes other individuals like health professionals or school administrators, a pathway for...

Just hours after more than 100 people in Christchurch were injured or killed in a brutal anti-Muslim hate crime, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that New Zealand's gun laws would be changed. Six days later, New Zealand banned military-style semi-automatic assault weapons and high capacity magazines. The move had widespread support across the country, including from opposition leaders. That is what leadership looks like, and we need it here at home. Tell your members of Congress it's time for them to show leadership. Tell them to take action on gun safety, including passing universal...

Today is Valentine's Day. We're holding our loved ones close and remembering the Parkland families. One year ago today, a gunman entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland and shot to death 17 of their students and educators, injuring 17 more . And over these last 12 months, guns have continued to devastate families and communities across the country. Today, as we give valentines to our loved ones, let's also give a valentine to the Parkland families — and to all families who have lost loved ones to gun violence — by joining our voices in a powerful call for action. Let me tell you a little something about Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner. She has a husband, two kids and an enormous dog that follows her around the house with its food bowl. She hosts a weekly public policy radio program called Breaking Through. She is also executive director of MomsRising. In other words, Kristin is extremely busy. Yet, after the 2016 election, Kristin knew she needed to make the time to write a book: A book to help women navigate the tough times she saw ahead. A book to amplify women’s voices to make sure we would continue to be heard. A book to keep women focused on the kind of...

We woke up this morning to devastating news. Once again, our hearts are broke as we heard reports of people hurt and killed by gun violence, this time in a mass shooting in Las Vegas. Last night, from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel, a gunman rained a hail of bullets on a crowd of thousands of people attending an open-air country music festival. As of noon EDT Monday , there were 58 confirmed dead, and more than 500 injured, with the toll expected to grow. This is the largest mass shooting in recent history and is nothing short of an act of domestic terrorism. Early reports are that the...

Last Sunday in Plano, Texas, a man fatally shot eight people at his estranged wife’s Dallas Cowboys watch party, including his wife. He was stopped after a police officer arriving on the scene heard gunfire, was confronted by the gunman, and shot him . Two days later , the NRA got one step closer to realizing its wish to disguise the sound of gunfire. On Tuesday , the Republicans in Congress moved forward the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, which would specifically deregulate silencers among a host of other alarming provisions for weakening federal gun laws ...

Rain continues to fall on Houston and surrounding areas. As we watch Hurricane Harvey victims struggling through floodwater to reach safety, fighting for their very survival, we are heartbroken and searching for ways to help. Well, here’s one critical way: Make sure the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is adequately funded so help gets to Texas quickly. FEMA must be given the emergency resources it will take to meet the unprecedented needs of Hurricane Harvey victims. *Click here to tell Congress to pass emergency funding for Hurricane Harvey victims as soon as possible, with...

The NRA is using dangerous language to rally their members against progressives and people of color. In a vicious and incendiary recruitment ad , filled with images from recent demonstrations, NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch tells viewers, “They use their media to assassinate real news. They use their schools to teach children that their president is another Hitler." She ends the video by saying, “The only way we stop this, the only way we save or country and our freedom, is to fight this violence of lies with a clenched fist of truth. MomsRising has launched a project called #KeepMarching, which helps our members on the ground organize their friends, family, neighbors and anyone else in their community into "circles" to take action together and have an impact on their communities as well as for the nation. Some #KeepMarching members already have longstanding groups of people that they are shaping into their #KeepMarching Circles, while others are starting from scratch. Karen is a #KeepMarching member in St. Louis, MO. When I asked her about her group, her answer was so powerful, inspiring and beautiful, I had to share. So...
