Like any parent, when I drop off my kids at school, I want to trust they'll be safe. Safe from violence, safe from bullying, safe from diseases and pests — and safe from pesticides that can cause them harm. As evidence continues to pile up that pesticides can harm children's health and development, many schools are finding ways to control pests on school grounds without spraying dangerous chemicals. A new report from our coalition partners, Californians for Pesticide Reform (CPR), outlines the scope of the problem, the most innovative solutions, and ways parents and policymakers alike can...

Turns out people really don't like their strawberries messed with. The recent uproar about a new cancer-causing chemical in strawberry fields started here in California. It's since gone nationwide – and if you want to help keep strawberries cancer-free, there are plenty of ways to join in . Here's the story, in a nutshell: EPA approved the pesticide methyl iodide in 2007 as a substitute for the ozone-depleting pesticide methyl bromide. Methyl iodide causes cancer and is extremely toxic. One respected scientist called it “one of the most toxic chemicals on earth.” Like methyl bromide, the new...

Last week, researchers found a host of toxic chemicals in the bodies of pregnant women throughout the U.S. Industry reps quickly trotted out their favorite messages in response: "Chemicals are a fact of modern life," "just because toxins are in your body doesn't mean they'll hurt you," and "the levels are too low to matter - researchers have new tools that can measure extremely low levels." The fact is, low levels of chemicals in the womb can matter a whole lot. And studies like last week's make the chemical industry very, very nervous. Researchers from UC San Francisco dug into samples...

Just before Thanksgiving, the chemical industry squashed a bi-partisan effort to ban the controversial chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) from baby bottles and children's drinking cups. Really guys? Protecting kid s from toxic chemicals should be a no-brainer, right? Especially when the science is so strong, the scientists themselves are calling for action. After the U.S. effort stalled, the European Union plowed ahead and voted to ban BPA in baby bottles - following the lead of Denmark, France, Australia and Canada. The American Chemistry Council should be downright ashamed of itself. They're the...

For the past month, pink ribbons have been everywhere — along with bracelets, shoes, t-shirts, even pink KFC buckets. Yet for all this colorful breast cancer awareness, somehow we're still not talking about one of the key things we can do to prevent the disease: stop eating, drinking and breathing cancer-causing chemicals. Sounds like a good idea, right? Scientists tell us there's plenty of evidence linking chemical exposure with cancer. Astonishingly, a conversation about this kind of prevention simply wasn't part of the mix. There were a few notable exceptions. Our friends at Breast Cancer...

As a working mom, I've learned the value of setting priorities, and the importance of thinking about how today's decisions affect the future. That's why I'll be voting on Tuesday , and I'm pestering my family, friends & neighbors to do the same. The outcome of this year's national elections will determine whether and how we, as a country, prioritize issues I care a lot about - issues like safe food, children's health, protection of workers and support for family farms. We'll also learn whether corporate spending on politics (which has been off the charts ) can successfully hijack our...

There’s nothing quite like a fresh, juicy strawberry. What many people don’t know is that some of the nastiest pesticides are used in strawberry fields, and the powers-that-be in California are considering a pesticide that's such a "good" carcinogen it's often used in cancer experiments in the lab.

Personally, I like my cranberries and pumpkin pie chemical-free. Pesticide Action Network's new What's On My Food? iPhone App makes the invisible problem of pesticides more visible, showing which pesticides are found on what foods, and how those chemicals can harm human health.
