Children are dying. A bully is making their lives miserable. A bully is threatening them. Humiliating them. Being mean.

As a woman, a mother, a wife and an educator, gender equity is an issue that is very close to my heart and frankly, an idea whose time has come.

You probably didn’t know it, but today is Parents’ Day. For 89 years, during the third week in November, we celebrate American Education Week, and each day of the week we celebrate a different aspect of what makes education work. Today is Parents’ Day. Any teacher will tell you how much we rely on parents as our closest partners in making sure kids get what they need. And any teacher will tell you how hard it is for so many parents in this time of fiscal meltdown not to be having their own parental meltdown. There’s never been so much stress on a family. Some parents are working two or three...

I remember when I first started teaching sometime in the late 1800s when one of the moms of one of my 4th graders came to the class to apologize. She had always been The Room Mother for her kids, but this year she was working outside the home, and she was apologizing...

Some of the most patriotic Americas I know are those who loved this country so much, they chose to become Americans. They do not take our country or our responsibilities for granted.

Last week the Corporate Model School Reformers issued a manifesto. Like most manifestos, it’s simple and slick … and wrong.

Some time ago, NEA was contacted by the Heifer International foundation. I laughed when I heard their name. I thought it sounded like the cow...It is the cow.

I got used to pulling out my wallet for my school kids. The same shopping trip for the shot glasses, my own little boy asked if he could have something-or-another. I remember telling him, “Sweetie, we can’t afford that.”

The Net is about connecting. It’s about reaching. It’s an electronic whisper in an ear that wants to know. And then wants to know more. And then wants to reach out to others. It’s about making a whisper a shout and giving form to the shout so it becomes a mighty chorus working in harmony to do something to help.

Back in the day, when I was small, I remember waking up too early for TV to be on. I woke up too early for TV to be on. If you are under 20, you have no idea what I just said. My brothers and sisters would run downstairs in our jammies on a Saturday morning to watch cartoons, but TV didn’t come on until 6 am, so it was possible to wake up too early.

There is a universal measure. When faced with a problem, do what’s right for children. If you do what’s right for children, it’s the right solution.

I’m going to a bloggers conference. My first. I am qualified because I write this blog. But maybe there’s something else that qualifies me. I write what matters to me. I represent 3.2 million educators in America’s public schools, colleges and universities. And when you represent people, you try to give voice to them.

These Standards are everything. Because they are the foundation. On the cardboard foundation of No Child Left, the house falls. Strong standards are something we can build a future on.

I knew what was coming. I knew from the pre-show questions the producer asked me off camera how “balanced” the Friends would be. Q. Wouldn’t you say that the key to reform is to fire bad teachers, which is now impossible? A. Well, I’m so glad you asked the question because a lot of people out there don’t understand that all teachers have is a fair way for a good teacher to defend herself if she is treated unfairly and that process is develo... Q. Excuse me, but wouldn’t you say that it’s impossible to reform schools because unions protect bad teachers from being fired? A. Again, there’s a lot...

There is a very smart new Member of Congress from California who gets it. Congresswoman Judy Chu is tired of jumping on rickety legislative bandwagons of blame and shame and name the bad guys and all will be magically right with all of our schools. She’s an educator. So she knows it’s complicated. So she knows as we start down that road to reauthorizing (read that: getting rid of the Stupid Stuff in) No Child Left, what we need to leave behind are those gimmicks of abusing high-stakes tests and pretending they mean something they don’t. She’s put together a compelling case for rethinking what...
