A friend recently gave birth to twins. When I visited them today, she sat feeding one baby a bottle, while dad was bathing the other baby—classically—in the kitchen sink. Does this scene surprise you? Probably not, if you’re under age twenty-nine. According to a recent study by the Families and Work Institute , today many men and women are chucking traditional parenting roles—as in, the mom takes care of both those babies while the dad goes to work to earn money. Only 41% of the people surveyed held that view, down from 64 percent in 1977. Men’s attitudes have changed even more than women’s:...

On May 13, Workplace Flexibility 2010, an organization at Georgetown University, released its summary report: Public Policy Platform on Flexible Work Arrangements. It's a set of policy solutions to expand Americans’ access to flexible work arrangements such as compressed workweeks, predictable schedules, and telecommuting. The report represents the end of a five-year review of research and listening to employer, employee, and consumer representatives on all sides of the issue, left and right, public and private sectors, management and workers. It tries to provide a blueprint for the White...

Sometimes our kids know more than we do. Children know that if they keep asking their parents the same question, over and over, they might just get the answer they are looking for.

When we try to fit together the pieces of the puzzle we call our work and family lives, often there’s a piece missing, another ripped in half, or one whose place we simply cannot find.

I regret to inform you that you're a victim of your own success: As a result of mothers across the country expressing their outrage at wage discrimination, we have not one, but two (yes, two!) major pieces of legislation moving in Congress to protect women and people of color from discrimination in the workplace.

I have written an article in Tikkun magazine called, “Can a Group Like MomsRising.org Lead the U.S. to a New Bottom Line?” It’s a brief introduction to the mothers’ movement, MomsRising.org’s MOTHERS platform, and how these point to the need for and possibility of a new bottom line in America, one where families should not have to choose between the job they need and the family they love. I argue that at this moment in U.S. history, few Americans would be anything but grateful if public policies and business practices could help them realize synergy between their work and non-work lives...

Many election-year observers have noted the absence of a compelling idea or framework to unite either party—and ultimately the electorate—in the Presidential race. Slogans like "change," "experience," and "security" don't suffice at a time when Americans are being pounded by waves of global, demographic, and technological change.

On International Women's Day Saturday, I started thinking about moms around the world and then moms in our own United States of America. As the mother of four children, I've spent a lot of time over the years breastfeeding babies, and so I wondered: Why do moms in the U.S. still lack a guarantee of some paid maternity leave so they have time to bond with their bundles-of-joy?

Written by Nanette Fondas and Katie Bethell A stay-at-home mother doesn't get a paycheck, so she might wonder if the Fair Pay Restoration Act impacts her life. At first glance it appears not, but a closer look shows that it does affect her and that all moms -- regardless of their stay-at-home or working mother status -- would be wise to support it.
