The following is a guest post from a favorite mom of mine with some great news - Mary Anne Hitt, Director of the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign: Are you one of the over 800,000 people who submitted a comment to the Environmental Protection Agency supporting proposed mercury pollution protections? Are you one of the hundreds who attended a public hearing in Chicago, Atlanta, or Philadelphia to support the draft standards? Are you one of the hundreds who attended a hair testing event to check your mercury levels, organized a stroller brigade with fellow parents, or joined a rally to get these...

My colleague Mary Anne Hitt, the Director of the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign, has a powerful column today about mountaintop removal coal mining and birth defects, and I wanted to share it with the Moms Rising audience. Here it is (with a photo of Mary Anne and her daughter Hazel): I just can't stop thinking about a new scientific study published this week that found there are "significantly higher" rates of birth defects near mountaintop removal coal mining operations. As a mother of a 1-year-old, I can vividly remember the long wait of pregnancy. I was so excited to meet my new daughter...

I just had to share this excellent column from my colleague Mary Anne Hitt, the director of the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign and a mom. Happy Mother's Day! Mother's Day Wish This Sunday, I will be celebrating my second Mother's Day. My daughter Hazel (pictured at the left testifying with me last year) was born last year a few days prior to Mother's Day, and so I had the unforgettable experience of celebrating my first mother's day with both of her grandmothers - we called it the Mother's Day trifecta. Since that Mother's Day I've gone back to work full-time as the director of the Beyond...

In honor of Mother's Day this Sunday, I invited an amazing mom and activist to share her story about a very important issue the Sierra Club is working on: toxic mercury pollution from coal plants . This piece is by Anna Getty, a member of the Sierra Club, and the co-founder of Pregnancy Awareness Month, a month-long campaign that provides "how to" ideas and inspiration to show women how easy it can be to make healthy changes in their lives. Protect Your Children from Coal's Mercury Pollution As a mother of a 6-year old and a 20-month old, I love playing with my children and teaching them...

My colleague Mary Anne Hitt, the director of the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign , is a new mom and has some words for those trying to greenwash schoolkids and college students: As a new mom, I'm paying more attention these days to how big companies are trying to influence our kids. I just learned that one of the biggest blockers of climate action in the U.S. is now bringing its obstructionism to your kid's middle school classroom. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for 21st Century Energy just released an energy education guide for teachers of 5th - 8th grade . The guide explains to...

My colleague Bruce Nilles, the Deputy Conservation Director of the Sierra Club, has been sharing community coal ash profiles in his columns lately . This week's column (which I've shared below) features a mom fighting back against coal ash , the toxic by-product of burning coal for electricity. Coal ash is especially dangerous to children, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that 1.54 million children live near coal sites. EPA says that living near a coal ash site can be worse for kids’ health than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Want to know if you live near a coal...

For those amazing eco-moms out there, this week may be quite busy. Thursday is Earth Day and there are thousands of events being held nationwide to honor our planet - be they stream cleanups, advocacy days, or just working in the home garden with their kids. Here at the Sierra Club , we know a good many fantastic eco-moms making a difference, but we thought we’d choose an extra special woman to profile for this Earth Week post: Mary Brune . Mary is the wife of Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune , and mom to Olivia (age 6) and Sebastian (age 1) - and she and her family are about as...
