On Latina Equal Pay Day, We Are Active, Engaged, and Determined to Get Out the Vote and End the Discriminatory, Punitive Wage Gap that Harms Latinx Families

“In this season of unprecedented activism and engagement, America’s moms are continuing to step forward and help shape our country’s future. We know all too well that the wage gaps women and moms face are unjust and take an especially terrible toll on Latinx workers and their families. It is absolutely unacceptable that a Latina mom would have to work beyond age 100 to be paid what her white, male counterpart is paid by age 60. Our communities, our economy and our country suffer as a result.
“On Latina Equal Pay Day, we lift and center Afro-Latinas, LGBTQ+ Latinx workers, Latinas with disabilities, and undocumented Latinas in our fight for pay equity. We will not stop until the discriminatory, punitive wage gap that harms so many families is gone.”
-Statement of Xochitl Oseguera, Vice President, MamásConPoder
“Today is Latina Equal Pay Day, which comes so late in the year because Latinas are paid just 55 cents for every dollar paid to white men, and Latina moms just 45 cents for every dollar paid to white dads. It is a disgrace that Latinas have to work 22 months to be paid what white, non-Hispanic men are paid in just a year.
“Over the course of a 40-year career, Latinas typically lose $1 million to the wage gap. The result is less money for food, housing, health care, education, and other necessities, and more hardworking moms and their children living in poverty. These grim, outrageous statistics call for each of us to be equal pay voters. Latinx moms know that economic justice is always on the ballot.
“This year, working families called on our U.S. Senators to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, raise the minimum wage and phase out unjust exclusions for tipped workers, which the U.S. House of Representatives did last year. To help close the racist and sexist wage gap, Congress should also guarantee paid family and medical leave and earned sick days for all workers, make childcare affordable, and put strong anti-discrimination measures in place for pregnant workers and all workers.”
