News release JEFFERSON COUNTY, TEXAS -- Texas Jail Project, a nonprofit that advocates for improving conditions in Texas county jails, and MomsRising, an online and on-the-ground multicultural organization of more than 1 million mothers and their families, are petitioning a Jefferson County judge to release Kandace Washington, a 22-year-old black mother who is more than 7 months pregnant.

News release WASHINGTON, DC - On Monday, August 7th, in celebration of National Breastfeeding Month, members of MomsRising, a national mom-focused advocacy organization, will hand deliver letters to members of the US Senate featuring personal stories of moms living in the United States that highlight  the need for better pumping accommodations for breastfeeding moms at the workplace.  

Statement “Black women in our country experience an appalling wage gap. It took almost 19 months, going into July of 2017, for Black women’s earnings to catch up to those of white, non-Hispanic men in 2016. That is a wage gap of 63 cents on the dollar for the average Black woman working full-time, year-round – an average loss of more than $21,000 per year compared to what is paid to white, non-Hispanic men. Black mothers are penalized even further, earning just 51 cents on the dollar. This is outrageous.  

Statement “Today, Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate continued their grossly irresponsible, shameful assault on our economy and the health care families rely on by approving a Motion to Proceed to a vote on a mysterious health care bill. Republican U.S. Senators have not read the bill, experts have not reviewed the bill, the Congressional Budget Office has not scored the bill’s impact and, most importantly, the American people know nothing about the bill. This partisan, secretive process has been shocking in its disregard for families and our economy -- and it must stop now.
