Did that DIY Father's Day gift from Pinterest just not work out? DON'T PANIC! Share your "Pinterest Fail" with other distressed moms and then move on to our super easy “Doc Dad's Fix-it-Kit,” created by MomsRising Campaigner Felicia Willems and her son.

While homemade tie clips and wallets are fantastic, it’s important to remember that dads, just like moms, could use tools to make everyday parenting easier. So this Father’s Day, make Dad a personalized, travel-friendly First Aid Kit to fit your child’s health and safety needs. This will be a fun and easy craft to complete with your kids with the added bonus of being incredibly useful for parents. Not only will Dad be moved by his homemade gift, but he’ll be prepared for those skinned knees, insect stings, and upset stomachs.

Here is what you’ll need:

Supplies:

  • Bag/container (canvas/cloth material would be best for painting) such as:
    • A canvas bag with pockets from your local craft store
    • A recycled cloth purse or messenger bag
    • A sturdy lunch bag
    • A travel kit bag or make-up pouch
  • Paint and brushes for decorating
  • Newspaper and/or tablecloth (to protect surface during painting)
  • Medical & repair items frequently used in your family, such as:
    • Wound cleaner
    • Flash light
    • Tweezers
    • Scissors
    • Children's pain reliever
    • Upset stomach relief
    • Band aids
    • Anti-bacterial ointment
    • Hand cleaner
    • Kit with gauze & alcohol swabs
    • Any specific medications your children require like asthma or allergy medication

Instructions:

1. Go to the store with your kid(s) to get the necessary supplies. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss your child’s health and safety needs with them under the positive framework of working on a great gift for Dad! Note: When picking out the container for the Doc Dad’s Fix-it-Kit, try to keep in mind your lifestyle and what Dad does with the kids. If he is going to keep it in the car, you may want to use a sturdier container, but if he needs it while bike riding with the kids, you may want a smaller canvas bag with clip on straps!

2. Set up a painting station for your kid(s) and get to painting! You can finger paint or draw—whatever you and your children prefer! Make sure to use paint and a thin paintbrush to include the label “Doc Dad’s Fix-it-Kit” and a first-aid symbol so Dad can easily recognize the kit when needed. If you want to be more precise, you might consider using fabric markers after the original art has dried or even a stencil.

3. To finish up the kit, just let your family’s work of art dry and then add your supplies! If you have paint left over and your kid(s) want to keep painting, adding a homemade Father’s Dad Card would be a great finishing touch!
