‘Tis the season for turkey, mashed potatoes, and awkward political conversation at the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Bringing up the presidential campaign might provoke more angry stares than helping yourself to the last slice of pie. But here’s a conversation worth having:

Last Friday, Republican front-runner Donald Trump made news when he responded to a question about child care during a televised forum in Iowa. “It’s a tough situation for people,” he acknowledged, adding that more US businesses can and should offer child care for their employees.

“A lot of companies that I’ve seen throughout the country… have child-care centers,” Trump said. “It’s something that can be done, I think, very easily by a company.”

Trump’s remarks came in response to a question from Every Child Matters staffer Jill Applegate at a forum on economic issues in Newton, Iowa, prompting an immediate flurry of stories in national media outlets.

Trump offered one reason some of his companies provide child care: “I get great people because of it.”

We commend companies that have family-friendly workplace policies. The fact is, only 2 percent of US businesses currently offer on-site day care.

Parents who earn the minimum wage—and are unlikely to have access to child care through their employer—can be forced to choose between spending as much as half their annual income on child care or staying home to care for their kids, forgoing income and career advancement.

At first, Trump seemed puzzled by the child-care question, pointing out that on the campaign trail, “it’s not something you hear about as much as you would think.”

But we hope that can change. Every Child Matters will keep asking the candidates about the issues, insisting that potential nominees in both major parties make clear how they aim to ensure working parents have access to quality, affordable child care. This is just the beginning of a conversation between citizens and all the candidates about policies affecting kids and working families.

“Kids are our most precious resource,” Applegate explained, “and if we don’t take care of them while they’re young, there will be consequences later on.”

“I agree with you,” Trump said.

Something everyone around the table can agree on this Thanksgiving.
