This week we're featuring the inspiring Elisa Batista! She shares her thoughts on staying healthy, and building a healthy community, below. Thanks for all you do, Elisa!
1. Hi Elisa! Tell us a bit about you.
I am a campaign director for MomsRising.org / MamásConPoder.org, social media influencer -- I helped found the award-winning MotherTalkers.com blog and community! -- a mom of two awesome kids, and a wife who lives in Berkeley, California
2. Tell us about how you're building a healthy family and community.
Living and promoting health is who I am. I am the sole cook in my home and I make sure that I regularly prepare nutritious meals. We regularly eat beans, whole grains and veggies at home. I also share healthy recipes and tips on the MomsRising.org and MamásConPoder.org blogs as well as my personal Facebook page. I am also a board member of the Ecology Center of Berkeley. We are in charge of the city's farmers' markets and recycling program, and were behind initiatives like the soda tax in Berkeley. It is through MomsRising and the Ecology Center that I promote health and wellbeing in my community and the country!
3. Any advice you'd share with other healthy food advocates?
In addition to encouraging our loved ones to live healthier lives, we also have to address the systemic reasons people aren't healthy: lack of local access to healthy foods; inflexible workplaces that don't allow for parents to share a healthy meal with their children; junk food marketing to kids; and lack of open and safe places for our kids to play. It IS overwhelming, but my organizing philosophy is "both/and."
4. How can folks get in touch with you and learn more about your work?
I love hearing what people are up to and how we can work together! They can get in touch with me via MomsRising at Elisa@MomsRising.org, on my Facebook page (Elisa Batista, Berkeley, California), and/or Twitter (@ElisaBatista, @MamasConPoder).
Be sure to sign up for the Good Food Force update and Facebook community to join our ongoing conversation around building healthy kids and communities.
