At MomsRising we love a success story! Medicaid and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or food stamps) are effective and efficient in boosting our families’ health and nutrition, while at the same time lifting millions of families out of poverty and strengthening our economy. Now that’s a success!

We strive to be a country that offers opportunities for all—especially our kids—and builds an economy that works for everyone. This is why we've compiled two storybooks with the experiences of families across the country with Medicaid and SNAP to highlight how these programs power our children and families!

Read and share them now!

Our nation’s priorities should reflect and respond to the needs of everyday families. How we spend our federal dollars says a lot about our nation’s values. It is vital to securing our future and our children’s future. We need a budget that provides opportunities for our children and families to succeed—not one that lines the pockets of the wealthy and well-connected. Medicaid and SNAP are a lifeline for families in times of need. They prevent our families from falling deeper into poverty and allow them to find their footing so they can contribute to our national economy.

Medicaid provides vital health coverage for over 70 million low-income children and families, pregnant women, people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, and the elderly. Importantly, it covers half of all births in this country—ensuring moms and kids get a healthy start—10 million people with disabilities, and 70% of all nursing home residents—ensuring our aging population receives the care they need.. Our families are helped across generations by Medicaid.

SNAP is critical to our families, especially the 1 in 5 children in our nation that live in food insecure households. Seventy percent of SNAP participants are in families with children and over half of those families have at least one adult in the household working. SNAP helps parents work, promotes healthy eating, and responds quickly to disasters and crisis like a hurricane or an economic downturn. This critical program also lifts our economy. For instance, because SNAP benefits are so urgently needed by families, they are spent quickly – 97% of benefits are redeemed by the end of the month of issuance – thereby bolstering local economies.

This is why moms, kids, and the people who love them are bringing these personal stories from people across the country about how Medicaid and SNAP boost our families, communities, and economy to members of Congress. Medicaid and SNAP truly do wonders for our families!
