Supporting Western North Carolina Families Affected by Hurricane Helene
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many families across affected regions are grappling with challenges that disrupt everyday life, including safely feeding their babies and young children. We were grateful to join the NC Breastfeeding Coalition’s Support & Advocacy for Infant Feeding in Emergencies (SAFE) Team that is on the ground providing vital support, education, and supplies to help families safely feed their babies — whether lactating, using formula, or starting solids —despite limited access to clean water and power.
The SAFE Team’s Mission
The SAFE Team’s work is essential. Operating in Western North Carolina and beyond, they have been on the ground delivering critical resources to families in need. Their efforts include:
-
Providing education and support to ensure families can safely feed their babies in emergency conditions.
-
Distributing vital supplies to help parents navigate the challenges of limited access to clean water and power.
-
Offering guidance for families using various feeding methods, including lactation, formula feeding, and starting solids.
This comprehensive approach ensures no family is left behind, regardless of their feeding choices or circumstances.
Why Infant Feeding Support Matters in Emergencies
During disasters, the lack of clean water, electricity, and other resources can make infant feeding incredibly complex and stressful. Families relying on formula may struggle with water contamination, while lactating parents may face challenges due to stress or lack of privacy. Meanwhile, those transitioning their babies to solid foods may have difficulty accessing fresh, safe options.
The SAFE Team’s work addresses these issues head-on, ensuring that every infant has access to safe and effective feeding options, even in the most difficult situations.
Be Apart of the Solution!
Emergencies like Hurricane Helene highlight the importance of community and compassion. By working together, we can ensure that every family has the resources they need to thrive, even in the face of adversity. Let’s stand united in our commitment to safe infant feeding and the well-being of all children.
Consider joining the SAFE Team and be a part of the movement to ensure every infant receives safe, effective feeding support during emergencies!
