Two years have passed since the signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act . In it, provision 4207 stated that employers must provide a place other than a bathroom and reasonable time for women to express their breastmilk during the baby’s first year of life. The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour division has cited 23 companies for not complying with this law. I can’t help but wonder how many other companies are getting away with not providing the accommodations for their nursing employees. Cross-posted from the Tiki Tiki blog . When I relocated to the U.S. from Ecuador and met my husband, we got married and a year later I got pregnant; what a blessing, we were so excited. During a prenatal care visit, my awesome doctor asked me if I was going to breastfeed. I found the question a bit strange…don’t all women breastfeed? We all have…you know… pechos. I said yes and really didn’t give it much thought after that. Little did I know at the time that breastfeeding in the U.S. was a big deal. Literally! For many women, returning to work is one of the reasons they give up breastfeeding or, even sadder, do not initiate it at all.
