Health care was so important to my family. I was in graduate school when I had my son, and I had no health insurance. Luckily, I was able to obtain healthcare coverage through Medi-Cal, which was essential to the well-being of my unborn child. I received quality care during the remainder of the pregnancy and for a couple of years after birth until I finished graduate school. I have had the great privilege and blessing of being an African American woman in America. Some would consider this a curse because it has been a difficult and challenging walk, but I am truly proud and thankful to be black. It has made me strong. I stand on the backs of giants and a people who have overcame immense struggle and hardship and still we survive and thrive.
