If you've not only heard about - but really thought about - the Family Friendly Workplace Ordinance that was just passed in San Francisco, you know what we're getting at with this title. If you're still celebrating the legislation that will go into effect on January 1, 2014, you may want to stop reading as we expose the plain truth that will cause your bubbly to go flat in about 3.5 seconds. We'll start at the top and say that the intent of the ordinance is ultimately good - to attract more families to the San Francisco area, keep them there, and make it less likely that these Californians...

A few months ago, I received a note from a longtime friend, Joan Blades (co-founder of MomsRising ) introducing us to Katrina Alcorn . Joan thought we might support each others’ work, and it turns out that yes, supporting each others’ work was indeed a no brainer. I learned about the book Katrina was writing – Maxed Out: American Moms on the Brink – and it definitely sounded intriguing. After all, I’m an American Mom and before ROWE, I definitely would have described myself as being on the brink of many things…insanity being one of them. When I received my advance copy of the book, I was...

The other day, I read an article on Forbes called “ Tips For Dealing With Lazy Co-Workers .” It’s a fun topic, isn’t it, because we all love to feel like we are the only ones working hard. And it’s such a hardship to put up with lazy old Joe in the next cube over. Ugh! Time to review one of our favorite words: Sludge . “Sludge” is the toxic language we use to judge people for how they spend their time. It’s based on old beliefs about how work should happen. Sludge is when someone says, “10:00 a.m. and you’re just getting in? I wish I could come in late every day.” The belief being expressed...

Thanks to a new study pubished in MIT Sloan Management Review this week, we have some fun new terms to discuss today. Except, they're not really new. If you haven't read any of the multitude of articles (like here , here , and here ) about this study, then here's a quick overview. The study argues that office workers and bosses are heavily influenced by “passive face time,” the mere presence of someone’s face in the office on a regular basis. The data shows, whether consciously or unconsciously, managers focus on presenteeism when it comes down to performance reviews and promotions. Now for...

The concept of unlimited vacation or “no vacation policy” is becoming a popular idea . Large companies like IBM, HubSpot, and Netflix have kicked the standard two-week vacation policy to the curb. Over the years, we’ve worked with many organization, big and small, to help them implement a Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE) . A big part of this process is helping management and employees understand what it takes to make a “no vacation policy” actually work. Naturally, people love the idea of unlimited vacation. You hear about it and you want it for yourself. But it’s easy to say, harder to...

I want to share a story from my friend, Rebecca. She's a successful lawyer and mom, and she's been on the hunt for a better work environment. I hope you enjoy her story. In June 2012, I wrote a blog post called “ Having It All ”. I shared my journey through law school, the entry into private practice, having a baby, and my plan to claw and scratch my way into a work environment that allowed me to have it all. I wrote that blog post shortly after meeting Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson, the creators of the Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE) . They were on site at my employer’s offices to...

If micro-managers are like babysitters, then the bosses we all hope to have are like great coaches. Coaches inspire and bring out the best in their team. Micro-managers slowly suck the life out of you. Everybody knows a micro-manager, but nobody claims to be one. Certainly, bosses view themselves differently than their employees see them. 1 in 3 managers say they use a coaching style, but only 1 in 5 employees agree (according to this Adecco study ). So, here’s my take on some of the most distinctive attributes of an inspiring coach and a micro-manager. Take this quiz and see what kind of...
