In what feels like another lifetime… It was summer and we decided to take the kids and my mom fishing. My son wanted to bring his new bike with the training wheels. As soon as his dad took it out of the truck, he was off. Happy to have a big place to ride, he had a smile from ear to ear. A little while passed and he asked his dad to take the training wheels off. Once the wheels were off, his dad held on to the back to steady the bike and he began pedaling. It didn’t take long for him to tell his dad that he could do it and dad should let go. I held my breath and his dad held on for a minute...

In 2006, the mother of a teenage daughter involved in the juvenile justice system, in Hawaii, contacted a small, non-profit in Lake Charles, Louisiana, over 4000 miles away. The mother was seeking support from someone who could understand her plight in navigating the juvenile justice system and possibly, help her find the treatment and services her daughter desperately needed. Her search, to find someone who had experienced the same challenges, had taken her months of calls, letters, emails and Internet searches. Her efforts and lack of response had left her hopeless. Fast-forward seven years...

In 2001, my 13 year old son, Corey, was sent to what the “New York Times” called the worst juvenile prison in the country. What crime had he committed that earned him this hellish journey? He stole a $300 stereo out of a pick-up truck after he smashed out the window with a crowbar. His sentence was 5 years in the one of the most brutal facilities in the US. He would join nearly 2000 other children locked up in similar facilities in the state of Louisiana. He would become one of the 75% of kids charged with non-serious offenses. Lest you begin to think such places only exist in the rural South...
