WHY: As the United States marks National Breastfeeding Month and women return to the workforce in record numbers, two bills recently passed by Congress have dramatically expanded protections for workers who are pregnant, nursing, and/or in postpartum recovery. The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act ensures that an additional nine million women will have the right to take breaks as often as needed– as well as access to private areas in the workplace — to express breast milk, and that all women covered under the law now have new legal recourse if employers fail to comply. Under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, all employers with at least 15 employees are required to provide “reasonable accommodations” to employees who have healthcare needs stemming from pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, including light duty work, leave to recover childbirth, and lactation. Together, these landmark laws — which are being celebrated with a Times Square billboard all week — will provide significant health and economic protections for millions of women and families.

Texas Abortion Ban a Danger and an Affront to Moms

“S.B. 8, Texas’ draconian six-week abortion ban that is set to take effect today, is both a danger and an affront to all those seeking abortion care. Banning this basic health care at six weeks of pregnancy, which is well before most people even know they are pregnant, is blatantly unconstitutional and a clear violation of Roe v. Wade. The U.S. Supreme Court must block it.”

En mayo de 2021, el gobernador Jay Inslee aprobó la Ley Comienzo Justo para los Niños (Proyecto de Ley del Senado 5237) e hizo que el cuidado infantil fuera más asequible y accesible para las familias y más sostenible para los proveedores. A través de un nuevo impuesto sobre las ganancias de capital para las personas ultraricas, el cuidado infantil asequible se expandirá a más familias en la próxima década.
¡El estado de Washington ayuda a algunas familias a pagar por todo o por parte del costo del cuidado infantil! ¿Quién es elegible para asistencia para el cuidado infantil?

Part Mother’s Day celebration, part plea for help, and part call to action, the 8-hour MOMibuster will feature 2- to 3-minute videos from moms, parents, caregivers, and leaders all over the country sharing their situations and the policies they need. It will include moms talking about how they were pushed out of the workforce during the pandemic, parents talking about missing time with their babies because they are without paid family and medical leave, grandparents sharing that they go without the care they need, and caregivers struggling to make ends meet despite impossibly low wages.

“Our hearts break for the victims, families, and everyone affected by the mass murders at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas today. News reports tell us that at least 18 children and two adults were murdered by a gun-wielding teen. Others were injured as well. It is unacceptable that so much carnage, devastation, and tragedy – too often fueled by hate – have become so common in our country.
“It is intolerable that our children are not safe in their schools and that none of us are safe in our grocery stores or on our streets. It’s reprehensible that our freedoms – including the freedom of our children to grow into healthy adults – are being taken away by the ‘guns and high-capacity magazines everywhere’ culture in America.
“Every lawmaker at every level who has refused to adopt reasonable gun control – who has allowed guns and high-capacity magazines to fall into the hands of those who should not have them – who has ignored the safety of our children and communities – should search their hearts and recalculate their priorities.
“America’s moms do not want to raise our children in a country with so much violence, where our children are not safe, where mass shootings are commonplace, where there are more guns than people. We deserve better. SCOTUS Decision One Important Step Toward a More Humane, Functional Asylum System
Statement of Xochitl Oseguera, Vice President, MomsRising / MamásConPoder, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the U.S. Supreme Court ruling this morning in Biden v. Texas:
“The U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Biden v. Texas will bring us one step closer to ending the appallinghumanitarian disaster President Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy created. It affirms the Biden administration’s authority to implement more humane immigration policies. We have never needed that more than we do now. Remain in Mexico and Title 42 are racist policies that continue to create chaos and unimaginably dangerous journeys for asylum seekers. Those policies failed to deter asylum-seekers, failed to respect our laws, and failed to protect basic human rights. The tragic, heartbreaking deaths of 53 migrants in San Antonio this week were a stark reminder that people are being pushed to take highly dangerous routes, risking their lives, while our border remains effectively closed to asylum seekers. And people will continue risking their lives to come here to escape desperate conditions in their home countries.
“Seeking asylum is legal under U.S. and international law and a fundamental human right. Today’s ruling is a major step toward restoring normalcy at our border, but it is only the beginning. We must invest in our asylum system, fund immigration courts, and eliminate backlogs in processing asylum claims. When we do all that, we will strengthen our communities, help alleviate the labor shortage that is stifling our recovery and feeding inflation, and live up to both U.S and international laws. Moms Applaud Ohio Grand Jury for Refusing to Indict Brittany Watts, Exercising the Compassion and Sense Officials Lacked
Statement of leaders of MomsRising, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the Ohio grand jury’s refusal to indict Brittany Watts:
“After suffering a devastating miscarriage, Brittany Watts has been mistreated and abused by a system anti-abortion leaders designed intentionally to inflict pain and punishment on women. Thankfully for Watts, that ended yesterday evening when a grand jury refused to indict her on the ridiculous charge of abuse of a corpse in the wake of the miscarriage she suffered.
“From start to finish, this case has been an atrocious abuse of power, from the time Watts – a mother of three – was forced to wait for 8+ hours in the hospital for the care she needed, to police bringing charges after she miscarried a nonviable fetus, to being forced to endure the grand jury process while facing possible imprisonment for a felony. This is not how anyone should ever be treated.”

Jackson Women’s Health Organization continues to traumatize and devastate the country, with women of color, low-income women, young, rural and immigrant women, people with disabilities, and those who are LGBTQIA+ suffering the most.
“Every day anti-abortion zealots intrude in women’s reproductive health is a day when moms and pregnant people are abused and endangered, and when our maternal mortality crisis gets even worse. America’s moms will remain in this fight for as long as our autonomy is challenged, our privacy violated, and our access to reproductive health care threatened or denied. Reproductive rights are fundamental human rights.”
