Coney Barrett Nomination Threatens Our Health Care and Our Right to Choose Abortion and Live Free from Discrimination
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Opportunities diminished. Discrimination unchecked. Rights devalued. Health care, reproductive freedom, and justice denied. Checks and balances crushed. Promises discarded the moment they become inconvenient. The arc of the moral universe bending away from, instead of toward, justice. Democracy trampled.
"The nomination of Amy Coney Barrett is tyranny of the minority – a brazen power play by a hugely unpopular, utterly unprincipled President and his co-conspirators in the U.S. Senate to give an extremist anti-ACA, anti-abortion, anti-women’s, anti-LGBTQ+, anti-disability, and anti-civil rights jurist a lifetime appointment on our highest court.
“This is not what America’s moms want and not what our country needs. Confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett is a threat to the rights and freedoms moms rely on. Most people with pre-existing conditions are women, and we stand to lose our health coverage in the midst of a devastating pandemic in the challenge to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) the U.S. Supreme Court will hear in early November. Most people who have an abortion—who need an abortion—are moms. There is no mystery about Amy Coney Barrett’s positions: She is poised to take away our health care, deny us access to reproductive health care, and allow corporations to discriminate on the basis of race, sexual identity and other factors.
“Now more than ever, with the Trump administration’s botched response to the pandemic costing hundreds of thousands of lives, and with the administration attacking peaceful protestors, waging war on immigrants, violating the human rights of asylum-seekers, sanctioning discrimination, and working to undermine our election and suppress minority votes, we need a U.S. Supreme Court that will protect, not shred, our rights and liberties. There should be no vote on a replacement for the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg this close to the election, and Amy Coney Barrett must not be confirmed.”
