Following White House Summit on Working Families, MomsRising Takes to Capitol Hill and the Skies to Deliver Kites with Messages Supporting Family-Friendly Workplace Policies
Sending the message that “our families and our economy need a lift,” MomsRising.org, the online and on-the-ground grassroots organization for moms and everyone who has a mom will visit Capitol Hill on Tuesday, June 24 to deliver paper kites decorated with messages about the importance of family friendly workplace policies. Policies including access to affordable childcare, earned sick days, equal pay, a livable wage, and maternity and paternity leave.
The visits will come on the heels of the White House Summit on Working Families, hosted by the White House Council on Women and Girls, the Department of Labor, and the Center for American Progress, to focus on creating a 21st century workplace that works for all Americans. The summit convened businesses, economists, labor leaders, policymakers, advocates and others to discuss policy solutions that can make a real difference in the lives of working families and ensure America’s global competitiveness in coming decades.
MomsRising CEO and Executive Director Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner spoke at the event on Monday, as did several MomsRising members who shared their stories highlighting the need for the policy solutions discussed at the summit.
“Our current workplace policies are woefully out-of-step and out of touch with the reality of modern day life and change is long overdue,” said Rowe-Finkbeiner. “For the first time in history, women are half the labor force and moms are a huge proportion of those working women. Many workplace policies and practices--like access to affordable child care, paid leave, sick days, and decent and fair wages--need to be brought up to date to match our modern labor force. It's time.”
MomsRising is also sharing with the President and Members of Congress a book that includes stories from moms and dads across the country that highlight the importance of policies that support families.
