Moms Leader: ‘Kavanaugh’s Confirmation Would Have a Disastrous Impact on Our Lives and Our Country for Generations’

Statement from Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, CEO and executive director of MomsRising, an online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to serve as an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Last minute data dumps. Hidden records. A nomination by a president who is possibly an unindicted co-conspirator to federal crimes committed to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. The hearing before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee today is taking place under a toxic cloud and it should be halted.

“The moms of America recognize President Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh as the direct attack on women’s rights and freedoms that it is. If he is confirmed, Kavanaugh would alter the balance on the U.S. Supreme Court in ways that cause lasting damage to our ability to live and work free from discrimination, to get the health care and education our families need, and to block President Trump’s sexist, racist, xenophobic, anti-immigrant agenda.

“Judge Kavanaugh is a threat to the health care families depend on. He has expressed contempt for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in two cases and has criticized the law in speeches. Without the ACA, 130 million people with pre-existing conditions will no longer be able to get affordable coverage – or any coverage at all.

“Kavanaugh is a threat to reproductive health care, including access to birth control, which more than 90 percent of all women have used in their lives. He ruled that an employer’s religious beliefs should override an employee’s right to birth control coverage. He has expressed extreme hostility toward women’s bodily autonomy, including the right to reproductive choice. The ability to decide if, when, and how many children to have is crucial to women’s freedom and bodily autonomy. Moms in particular need access to this critical health coverage.

“Kavanaugh is a threat to workers' rights. Time and again, he has sided with big employers against working people who suffered discrimination and exploitation.

“Kavanaugh is a threat to gun safety legislation. He has made it clear he would strike down restrictions on assault-style weapons and put in jeopardy a range of gun safety laws.

“And with Kavanaugh on our highest court, presidential abuses of power will go unchecked.

“Kavanaugh’s confirmation would have a disastrous impact on our lives and our country for generations. His confirmation would be a direct attack on our health care and on women, moms and families. Judge Brett Kavanaugh is wrong for our nation. We urge every Senator to reject him for a lifetime position on the U.S. Supreme Court.”
