U.S. Senate Vote to Confirm Amy Coney Barrett Will Advance Injustice in America
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“This evening’s shameful vote in the U.S. Senate to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to a lifetime appointment on our country’s highest court will make our country weaker, more divided, and less just. This was a vote to deny health care to millions of people, including those with pre-existing conditions. It was a vote to deny meaningful relief to people who suffer discrimination of every kind, a vote to deny women access to reproductive health care, including abortion, and a vote to deny the country the justice, fairness and equality we want, deserve, and have worked hard to advance. The rushed, illegitimate, unethical process that U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell orchestrated was tyranny of the minority – a brazen power play that ignored the gravity of this appointment. It puts our democracy at risk.”

“The record is clear: Amy Coney Barrett will be an anti-Affordable Care Act, anti-abortion, anti-women, anti-civil rights, anti-LGBTQ+, anti-disability jurist for the next several decades. Her confirmation is a direct threat to the rights and freedoms moms rely on. She is poised to take away our health care, jeopardize women’s health, allow corporations to discriminate on the basis of race, sexual identity and other factors, and possibly affect the outcome of next week’s election. Her views on equality for LGBTQ+ people are appalling, from her failure to support same-sex marriage to the positions she has taken to deny trans people their basic rights.
“Nothing says more about Republican priorities than the fact that the U.S. Senate trampled on its own procedures and commitments to rush through the Barrett confirmation while doing nothing to help the millions of moms and families who desperately need pandemic relief. Now that the U.S. Senate has adjourned, Senators will begin their reckoning with those they are supposed to represent.”
