Statement “Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced that states will be able to apply for waivers allowing them to implement work requirements for Medicaid recipients. This misguided policy punishes the most vulnerable members of our society and has the potential to cause millions of people to lose their health coverage just when they need support the most. It will perpetuate poverty and inequality, jeopardize the health of families, disproportionately harm women, undermine our economy, and do little to help anyone find or keep a job.

Statement “The Maryland House of Delegates voted today to overturn Governor Larry Hogan’s ill-conceived, outrageous veto of HB1, bringing the state one step closer to enacting earned sick leave law that will benefit families, workers, and the state’s economy.

Statement “With today’s vote, New Hampshire is one step closer to strengthening families and making our state’s economy more competitive. Whether it’s taking time to care for a new child, a sick family member, or even a loved one struggling with addiction, being there for families is what matters. Yet, far too many Granite Staters are still forced to make the impossible decision between earning a paycheck and taking care of a loved one or themselves.

Statement “Today, President Trump directed the Department of Homeland Security to heartlessly terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for some 200,000 Salvadorans living in the United States and is preparing to send families to dangerous situations. This is just the latest in a string of callous attacks on families by the Trump administration; and is yet another move that will threaten families and disrupt our communities and our economy.

Statement “There seems to be no end to the Trump administration’s efforts to sabotage the health insurance market and take meaningful coverage away from people who need it most. The Association Health Plan rule the administration released this week would allow insurers to sell junk health plans that fail to provide essential protections to people with pre-existing conditions and to millions of moms and older women.

Statement “We are alarmed and horrified by reports that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is considering formalizing a policy of separating parents from their children when families come to this country seeking protection or asylum, and by complaints that DHS has already done so in several cases. This practice is heartless and shameful and a gross violation of fundamental human rights. Children and families fleeing violence, who seek protection and asylum in our country, deserve to be treated with compassion, dignity and respect.

Statement “Today, in a desperate attempt to claim a single legislative victory in 2017, President Donald Trump signed the GOP’s atrocious tax bill into law. Trump ran on the promise that he would stand up for working families, yet the legislation he signed today will plunge the country deeper into debt, cause the deficit to skyrocket, hurt our economy, and devastate the programs that support our health, education, food and nutrition, housing and much more -- all to benefit big corporations and enrich the President’s family and wealthy Republican donors.

Statement “It is truly appalling that the continuing resolution Congress passed today to fund the government through January 19 fails to include adequate funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and protections for DREAMers. As a result, millions of families will face fear and uncertainty over the holidays, unsure about the future of their children’s health insurance or what their legal status will be in 2018. This is unacceptable. As a nation, we can and must be better than this.

Statement “The tax plan Congress passed today, on a partisan basis, is an insult to our country’s working families. This atrocious bill was written hastily and in secret, then pushed through to a vote despite overwhelming public opposition. Its aim is clear: to cut taxes for corporations and wealthy individuals at the expense of hard-working families. This is a disgraceful piece of legislation that will be a disaster for our nation and our economy if it is signed into law.
