My kids went to bed last night hoping for a snow day, and they'll be thrilled to have one. I have to admit that I'm excited, too.

But I can't help thinking of the parents and kids for whom this is not happy news. Kids who count on those breakfasts and lunches so they won't be hungry, and parents scrambling to find someplace for their kids so they won't lose their jobs.

Last spring I was talking with a fast food worker who shared how during last winter's snow days she finally found a neighbor to watch her kids, took two buses to work only to be told they didn't need her because business was slow, so she was out bus fare, babysitting, and her paycheck.

Family economic security shouldn't be so fragile in this country that a snow day puts you at risk.
