A local school Wellness Policy is a "written document of official policies that guide a local educational agency (LEA) or school district's efforts to establish a school environment that promotes students' health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity," according to the USDA.
Wellness policies are overseen by Wellness Committees, which usually operate at the school district level. Committees are eager to have community participation, i.e. from parents and/or advocates like YOU!
Get started by asking your school principal and/or school district about the Wellness Committee, including who leads the group, when they meet, and what they have on the radar this year.

- The USDA's Local School Wellness Policy website also offers helpful background and tools for advocates and community members.
This fall, MomsRising will be supporting parents as they get involved in local Wellness Committees. Please get in touch if you'd like support, resources, and/or to brainstorm ideas. Contact us at karen@momsrising.org.
