Moms Know the Truth: Lies and Distortions Can’t Cover Up the Harm the Trump Administration Is Causing Moms, Working Families, People of Color, Immigrants, the LGBTQ Community, and Many Others

“People in this country are living in a very different America than the one President Trump bragged about tonight. For moms, women, people of color, immigrants, the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, working families, seniors, and so many others, since Trump took office life has become harder, hatred and discrimination more ominous, government services more scarce, health care more tenuous, and our country much less united, safe and fair.
“Even in a speech filled with distortions and lies, the President’s comments about health care stand out as laughable. He cannot credibly claim that his administration cares about our health care, since it has fought relentlessly, through rules and regulations, in the courts and with Congress, to take away the coverage millions rely on. If Trump has his way, costs will skyrocket, people with pre-existing conditions will be denied care, Medicaid as we know it will disappear, and many more people will suffer and die without the coverage and health care they need. The promises he made on health care tonight are belied by his disgraceful record. Further, his comments on abortion are, like so much of what he says, designed to mislead the public and stoke division. It is profoundly disturbing.
“Trump’s ‘agenda’ on paid leave is nothing but lip service and a con game. It’s far from what moms and working families need. Granting paid parental leave to federal workers is an important step, and we thank the Democrats in Congress who fought so hard for so long to win it. But every working person deserves paid family and medical leave and the measure the President endorsed tonight is a loan, not leave. The Advancing Support for Working Families Act is not a paid leave bill, not a meaningful boost for low-income families, and not the solution businesses or our country need. In fact, it is a fatally flawed attempt to fool people by offering families a loan now that they would have to repay later – borrowing against their child’s future in order to care for her or him in the present. It would be a step in the wrong direction.
“If Trump really cared about paid leave, he’d support the FAMILY (Family And Medical Insurance Leave) Act -- the only bipartisan paid leave proposal that would cover all workers, address the range of caregiving needs families face, and be affordable for taxpayers and businesses alike. It would improve the public health, boost moms and all family caregivers, make our workplaces more equitable, and strengthen our country’s businesses and economy. It is the measure an administration that cares about working people would support.
“Unfortunately, the country is not in the midst of a blue-collar boom. In fact, Trump’s tax policies are delivering massive giveaways to the mega-wealthy and ultra-rich corporations, while causing a deficit that will take generations to repay and doing tremendous harm to working families and all those who struggle to make ends meet.
“Finally, we are outraged that the President once again infused his speech with inflammatory, racist, anti-immigrant language and cherry-picked stories designed to stoke hate, xenophobia, and division, made all the more dangerous by his complete failure to address gun violence in America. The country’s moms reject the cruelty and hatred with which his administration has treated immigrants, refugees and asylum-seekers, and the values that underlie it. We are greater than the fear and cruelty he stokes.”
