Rage.

Rage is the best way to describe how I’ve been feeling this week with the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court. And I know I am not alone.

Why? Because next week the U.S. Supreme Court will begin hearing oral arguments about a case that would decimate the Affordable Care Act (ACA), possibly in its entirety, including protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Despite this legislation having expanded health care access for nearly 25 million people (and strengthened protections for hundreds of millions more), Judge Barrett’s previous statements about the ACA indicate its fate—as well as the health care security of all those it has helped access care—looks precarious. Rage might not even be a strong enough word for how we should all feel if our health care protections are ripped away by an extreme U.S. Supreme Court decision.

What can you do? This fight is personal to me, and I know it is to you, too. The Affordable Care Act is what enabled me to finally get health insurance after being priced out and denied insurance for years before it was enacted. This law is what will ensure that my son—who had chemotherapy as an infant—will not be discriminated against due to the “pre-existing condition” with which he was born.

The Affordable Care Act has improved the health care security of hundreds of millions of people—like me and my son—across the country, and now its fate hangs in the balance. We cannot be silent. Make your video or write your story NOW!

With over 225,000 people dead so far from the COVID-19 outbreak, and millions more sick, the new “pre-existing condition” of having had coronavirus could now also prevent people from getting insurance if the Supreme Court strikes down the Affordable Care Act. Further, at least 20 million people would lose coverage while this pandemic—and its economic fallout—is still ravaging our communities.
