A Good Day for Moms, Families and the Country as the Inflation Reduction Act Becomes Law, But There’s Much More for Lawmakers to Do
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Reducing inflation, lowering health costs for some families, taking historic action to help address the climate emergency, and finally asking the wealthiest corporations to pay their fair share are meaningful, historic accomplishments. America’s moms and families thank Democrats in Congress and the Biden/Harris administration for making the Inflation Reduction Act law. It will make significant, overdue progress to reduce the cost of health coverage and prescription drugs for some and help address the climate emergency, paid for by finally starting to make mega corporations pay a fairer share of taxes. All that is vitally important.
“In particular, moms applaud the provisions that will prevent more than 3 million people from becoming uninsured next year by making health plans purchased through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace more affordable; rein in some of Big Pharma’s price gouging; reduce the cost of insulin for Medicare beneficiaries; and cap the cost of prescription drugs for seniors with Medicare Part D. We are very proud of the work of MomsRising members to speak out on these issues and share their personal stories with the media.
“But there is tremendous unfinished work for lawmakers, including:
-
Guaranteeing access to paid family and medical leave;
-
Making quality child care affordable and paying all care workers a living wage with decent benefits;
-
Improving maternal health care;
-
Reducing the cost of prescription medications for all of us;
-
Closing the Medicaid coverage gap, which has left millions of primarily Black and Brown people in the South without the potentially life-saving health care coverage they need;
-
Supporting home- and community-based services for seniors and people with disabilities;
-
Providing monthly Child Tax Credit payments;
-
Reducing the crippling burden of student debt; and
-
Creating a pathway to citizenship for immigrants, many of whom are critical to our health care and care infrastructure.
“Today is a good day for our country, but we will never have a strong economy, successful businesses, or thriving families until we build a care infrastructure. America is a country that produces enormous wealth. There is no question that we have the resources to build a care infrastructure, as most other industrialized nations have already done. The Inflation Reduction Act shows that we can improve the lives of families by closing loopholes that allow many big corporations and billionaires to pay little or no taxes. America’s moms will continue urging leaders to continue to create fairer tax policies and to take immediate action to tackle these vitally important issues. There’s no time to waste.”
