When I was a kid, I thought I was a lot tougher than I was. My mother taught me that if you acted like you could handle yourself, then you could. But sometimes that meant enduring unnecessary pain. My family could not afford to see a doctor and had to confront health needs alone. Several families like mine have endured illnesses simply because they could not afford medical evaluations, making early detection or prevention of them difficult. A report from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) finds last year's health insurance reform is already changing this. Preventative care has...

Having grown up in a family that could not afford health care, I know how difficult it can be to go to a doctor when you need one. That's one of the reasons I worked on health insurance reform. No person in the United States should go without care when they need it. I remember an afternoon in October 1951 when my 10-year-old brother Larry fell off his bike and broke his leg. Everyday, children from Nevada just like my friend Rylee Gustufson, a bright teenager from Henderson, eat lettuce, spinach, or eggs. They eat these foods at home and at school. But a raw spinach salad made Rylee so sick she spent months in the hospital and is still suffering from the effects of an E.coli infection. The system to prevent contaminated food from ever getting as far as Rylee’s kitchen table failed. That’s why I led the Senate in passing the FDA Food Safety And Modernization Act. This bill will protect...

The most important lesson my mother taught me was that by believing in myself I could handle anything. The confidence she instilled in me has propelled me through my whole career and helped me through many personal and professional challenges. On this Mothers' Day, I salute the mothers of MomsRising who have been tireless advocates for Nevada’s mothers. I celebrated the passage of health insurance reform with Donna Norton and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner when they visited me this past week. This new law is so important to Nevada families. Many health insurance providers have extended parental...

The passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 is a victory for American workers. It restores the law to where it was prior to the Supreme Court decision. And it could not have happened without the guidance of Senator Kennedy and the leadership of Senator Mikulski.
