My Mom never, ever gives up. In her gentle and cheerful way, she never gives up. Mom is 92 years old, she's had health and other challenges galore, and she never gives up. She is grounded in her faith in God. That faith has empowered her to face one obstacle after another with patience and grace. Every day, in some new way, she teaches me the meaning of faith and perseverance. I might visit her in the hospital one day, in a rehabilitation center the next, back home the week after. Her magnificent smile never dims and the twinkle in her eye is always there. She constantly astonishes her...

We are heading toward a slippery slope. The United Kingdom is moving closer to allowing scientists to create genetically modified children – something no country in the world currently authorizes. I posted in December about how the United States and the U.K. were going down a dangerous road. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the key U.K. regulator on these matters, recently issued (on very short notice), a “Call for evidence” on issues of safety and efficacy, with a deadline of today, March 21, 2014. HFEA has released draft regulations that would allow clinical trials...

Remember the three-parent babies I told you about in December? The ones made with genetic material from two different women? Well, the United States might be moving a step closer to their creation. A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Advisory Committee will hold a public meeting on February 25 and 26 regarding clinical trials of mitochondrial transfer procedures (MT). I’ve submitted a written statement and received FDA permission to present my arguments at the meeting. I’ll be there to oppose the use of such procedures because they would permanently change the genes passed down to future...

Lots of children have three parents. A boy’s mother and father might divorce, and one remarries. A girl might be raised by a single mother, a cousin, and an aunt. But everybody, without exception, has two biological parents. For the moment, at least. The United Kingdom is on the verge of permitting scientists to move forward with a procedure to create a human child from the DNA of three adults. The United States may not be far behind . Mothers everywhere should be deeply concerned. The procedure, called mitochondrial replacement (MR), would combine genetic material from the eggs of two...

When my daughter, Leah, was about five years old, a family friend gave her a doll as a birthday present. It was a gift that would lead to one of the worst arguments I ever had with my little girl. The doll was black, but it had long, straight hair. I did not want my daughter spending hours combing—and pining after—something she, as a little black girl with short hair, did not have. So, I grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the doll’s locks. Leah was livid. “Why did you cut her hair, mommy?” she cried. “I wanted to comb it.” I was, of course, wrong to do what I did without talking to Leah first...
